BEER HEAD - Beer
From the A3052 (The main coast road that runs from Exeter to Lyme Regis) take the B3174 down into the town of Beer. Follow the signs for "Beer village centre, Beach & Bay". Drive down through the village to the "Anchor" pub. Continue down the little road that leads to the beach. There is limited free parking but you will have to get there early in order to get a space. At busy times you will have to drop your kit and buddies here by the pebble beach, and park near the top of the hill. If there are no parking spaces on the roads there is a large central carpark behind the Dolphin Hotel on the main street.
Site Description
This is one of the nicest and most picturesque pebble beaches in Devon. There are a Several fishing boats based here. The boats are literally dragged up the steep pebble beach by winches - to be sheltered by the steep chalk cliffs. There are several smart kiosks on the beach that sell hot food and drinks. The best dive is along the rocks to the right of the beach as you look out to sea. The reefs are quite a way from the shore at about 10m. The peninsular is called Beer Head and it provides shelter to the bay from Westerly winds. Even though the site is sheltered visibility is often poor. The sea in this area is affected by the silt carried out into the sea by the rivers: Exe, Otter, Sid, and Axe. Unless the sea has been calm for a while, and there has been no rain - visibility is unlikely to be good.
In the summer this is a very busy bay. Due to the amount of boat traffic a surface marker buoy is essential kit and boat cover is advisable. The site is probably best avoided or dived with extreme caution.

Other information
Good facilities and shops in a nice town. There is lots of "Bed and Breakfast" accommodation available in Beer and the town is nicely central for a short diving holiday covering the nine sites along the "Jurassic Coast" between Seaton and Exmouth. The "Beer Caves" nearby are worth a visit. The impressively extensive caves are infact the historic remains of a giant underground quarry that dates back to Roman Britain.
There is a Kiosk on the little road down to the beach that sells freshly caught fish, crabs and lobsters from the local boats.
